Age Calculator
A general-purpose age calculator for everyday use — see your age in years, months, and days, plus fun totals (weeks, hours, seconds), your birth weekday, and how many days until your next birthday.
What this calculator does
This is the everyday age calculator — drop in a birth date to see your age right now, on a past anniversary, or on a future milestone date. It returns the year-month-day breakdown plus totals in months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds, the day of the week you were born, and a countdown to your next birthday. For records-style age between a birth date and a specific reference date, use the Chronological Age Calculator.
Formula
Working backwards from the target date:
days = target.day − birth.day (borrow 1 month if negative)
months = target.month − birth.month (borrow 1 year if negative)
years = target.year − birth.year
Variable definitions
birth— Your birth date (year, month, day).target— The date you want to calculate your age on. Defaults to today.
Step-by-step calculation
- Subtract birth day from target day. If negative, borrow days from the previous month and subtract 1 from months.
- Subtract birth month from target month. If negative, borrow 12 months and subtract 1 from years.
- Subtract birth year from target year.
- Calculate total days, hours, minutes, and seconds by direct timestamp difference.
Worked example
Born March 15, 1990, calculating age on June 22, 2026:
- Days: 22 − 15 = 7 · Months: 6 − 3 = 3 · Years: 2026 − 1990 = 36
- Age = 36 years, 3 months, 7 days
- Total days alive ≈ 13,247; total hours ≈ 317,928; total minutes ≈ 19.1 million
- Born on a Thursday
How to use this calculator
- Enter your birth date.
- Leave "Age on" as today or pick another date.
- Read the breakdown, totals, weekday born, and next-birthday countdown.
Common mistakes
- Approximating months as 30 days: calendar months have 28–31 days; always use real date arithmetic.
- Leap-day birthdays: if you were born on Feb 29, your "annual" birthday in a common year is usually marked Feb 28 or Mar 1.
Frequently asked questions
›How is age calculated?
Age is the difference between birth date and target date. The calculator subtracts year, then month, then day, borrowing from the previous unit when a value goes negative — the same way you'd do it on paper.
›How many days until my next birthday?
The result card shows a live countdown to your next birthday measured from the selected target date — handy for planning parties, gifts, or milestones.
›Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. It uses calendar dates directly, so February 29 birthdays and leap days between two dates are handled correctly.
›What is my age in days, weeks, months, hours, minutes, or seconds?
The calculator shows total months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds from birth to target date — useful for fun milestone numbers like 'one billion seconds old'.
›What if my birthday is in the future?
If the birth date is after the target date, the calculator shows an error — you can't have a negative age.
›Which day of the week was I born on?
The calculator shows the weekday of your birth alongside the age breakdown.
›Do I need a records-style age figure for a form or eligibility check?
For official forms, school enrollment, sports brackets, or clinical assessments, use the Chronological Age Calculator — it's positioned for records-style output between a date of birth and a chosen reference date.
