What this calculator does
This tip calculator turns six inputs (bill, sales tax, tip percentage, tip base, number of people, and rounding) into the tip in dollars, the tax in dollars, the total bill, the per-person tip, the per-person total, and a quick-reference table showing totals at common tip percentages.
Formula
tax = bill × (tax% ÷ 100) (or use a flat tax amount)
tip base = bill (pre-tax) or tip base = bill + tax (post-tax)
tip = tip base × (percent ÷ 100)
total = bill + tax + tip
per person = total ÷ people

Step-by-step calculation
- Compute tax from the bill, using either the tax percentage or a flat tax amount.
- Pick the tip base: pre-tax bill or post-tax total (bill + tax).
- Multiply the tip base by the tip percent divided by 100 to get the tip.
- Add bill + tax + tip to get the total. Optionally round the total up to a dollar.
- Divide the total by the number of people for the per-person share.
Worked example
A dinner bill (pre-tax) is $72.40. Sales tax is 8%, tip is 18% on the pre-tax bill, split between 3 people.
- Tax: 72.40 × 0.08 = $5.79
- Tip (pre-tax base): 72.40 × 0.18 = $13.03
- Total: 72.40 + 5.79 + 13.03 = $91.22
- Per person: 91.22 ÷ 3 = $30.41

Common mistakes
- Tipping on the wrong base: the U.S. convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total is generous but not required. Use the tip base toggle deliberately.
- Double-tipping a service charge: if a service charge or gratuity is already on the bill, an extra tip is optional.
- Rounding too early: compute the tip on the full bill, then round the final answer, not the inputs.
