tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100)

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Convert the tip percent into a decimal by dividing by 100.
  2. Multiply the bill by that decimal to get the tip amount.
  3. Add the tip to the bill to get the total.
  4. Divide the total by the number of people for the per-person share.

Worked example

A dinner bill is $72.40. You want to leave an 18% tip, split evenly between 3 people.

  • Tip: 72.40 × 0.18 = $13.03
  • Total: 72.40 + 13.03 = $85.43
  • Per person: 85.43 ÷ 3 = $28.48
