What this calculator does
This tip calculator turns four inputs — bill amount, tip percentage, number of people, and rounding preference — into the tip in dollars, the total bill, the per-person tip, the per-person total, and a quick-reference table showing totals at common tip percentages.
Formula
tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100)
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ people
Variable definitions
bill— Pre-tip amount on the check, in your local currency.percent— Tip percentage you want to leave (e.g. 18 for 18%).people— Number of people splitting the bill.
Step-by-step calculation
- Convert the tip percent into a decimal by dividing by 100.
- Multiply the bill by that decimal to get the tip amount.
- Add the tip to the bill to get the total.
- Divide the total by the number of people for the per-person share.
Worked example
A dinner bill is $72.40. You want to leave an 18% tip, split evenly between 3 people.
- Tip: 72.40 × 0.18 = $13.03
- Total: 72.40 + 13.03 = $85.43
- Per person: 85.43 ÷ 3 = $28.48
How to use this calculator
- Enter the bill amount from your check (pre-tax for the strict convention).
- Tap a preset percent (10–25%) or type a custom value.
- Set the number of people splitting the bill.
- Optionally turn on Round total to round the total up to the nearest dollar.
- Read the tip, total, and per-person amounts. Use the table below to compare other percentages.
Common mistakes
- Tipping after tax: the convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total is generous but not required.
- Double-tipping a service charge: if a service charge or gratuity is already on the bill, an extra tip is optional.
- Rounding too early: compute the tip on the full bill, then round the final answer — not the inputs.
Frequently asked questions
›What is a standard tip percentage?
In the United States, 15% is the baseline tip for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, and 22–25% or more for exceptional service. Tipping customs vary by country, so check local norms when you travel.
›Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
The convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator lets you choose — enter the pre-tax bill for the strict convention, or the total if you prefer to tip on the round number.
›How do I split the bill evenly with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. The calculator does both steps and shows the per-person amount, including each person's share of the tip.
›Is the tip calculated correctly when rounding?
The calculator computes the exact tip first and rounds to cents for display. Turning on 'Round total' rounds the final total up to the nearest dollar and back-solves the tip to match.
›Do I tip on the entire bill if there's a service charge?
If a mandatory service charge or auto-gratuity is already added, an additional tip is optional. Read the bill carefully before adding more.
›What is double-tipping?
Double-tipping means leaving an extra tip when a service charge has already been added. It's not required and usually not expected.
›How much should I tip for delivery?
Food delivery tips typically run 15–20% of the order subtotal, with a $3–$5 minimum on small orders. Tip more for bad weather or long distances.
